In a press conference Tuesday, Tipmont REMC announced
the company will be introducing a new program to its customers called
the EnviroWatts Program.
As an alternative to using nonrenewable fossil
fuels for electricity, the program will supply customers with what is
known as "green power" power that comes from "biomass,"
meaning sun and wind power.
In order to obtain the energy, generators will
be installed into landfills. The landfills produce methane, which will
power the generators, thus creating a source of electricity for residents.
"I hope this is the first step in something
that will allow us to have a portfolio of alternative sources for the
future," said Ken Ritchey, general manager of Tipmont REMC.
The cost of this program will cost one cent more
per kilowatt-hour for the first 500-kilowatt hours used monthly, said
Ritchey. "This is a voluntary program that customers sign up to
use. If a person uses 500 kilowatts of energy a month, their bill will
be $5 more," he said. The money goes to a separate EnviroWatts
fund governed by the EnviroWatts board of trustees, who will donate
the money to a charity.
"I encourage people who have an interest in
this to come in with ideas (to the board) that would benefit the community.
The funds will support something done locally," Ritchey said.
He said funds could possibly go to plant new trees
in the area.
The company is looking to supply a total of 8,000
kilowatts of power to its customers, and selection for service is on
first come, first serve basis. Anyone who is a Tipmont customer is eligible
to support the EnviroWatts Program.

would like to sign up for this service or learn more about the program

There will also be information on the program included with the customers
electric bill for the month of July.
