State St. update nears completion

Since school let out in May, the Indiana Department
of Transportation has been improving State Street. Its completion is
planned for no later than Aug. 15, depending on the weather.
"The way they explained it, the construction of
the far right lane will proceed to Waldron Street and the middle lane
construction will proceed to Airport Road," said Daniel Pusey, civil
engineer and land surveyor for Facilities Planning & Construction
at Purdue University. After the milling is completed, three inches of
base will be replaced and then another inch of surface will be applied
onto that.
Stadium Avenue, from University to Russell, will
be closed for two to five days beginning on Monday for the revision
and separation of the storm and sanitary sewer. Currently, it is one
sewer for both, after construction there will be two separate sewers.
Because there is a lot of gravel below the street's surface, the vibrations
of traffic make it unstable and will eventually give way, creating a
gigantic hole in the street, said Pusey.
Detour signs will be erected to guide west and
eastbound drivers, and construction signs will be posted throughout
campus. If traveling west on Stadium Avenue, drivers detour right onto
North University Drive, left onto Tower Drive, left onto Russell Street
and right to return to Stadium Avenue. If traveling east on Stadium
Avenue drivers detour right onto Russell Avenue, left onto Sixth Street,
left onto University Street and right onto Stadium Avenue.
"We know it's an inconvenience to the general public
but our job as engineers is to keep them safe," said Pusey.
Marstellar Street construction will be complete
within two weeks, said Pusey. The only thing left to do is rebuild the
street. Then Pierce Street will go under construction. All construction
in that area is in preparation for the new Krannert building on State
and Grant streets.
