Residence hall receives new look

FACELIFT: Rooms in Cary Quadrangle East are now joined with bathrooms after renovations that were completed this summer. The unit is air conditioned, and each room has a sink and walk-in closet.

Students returning to Cary Quadrangle’s East Unit this semester might feel a little lost.

With large suite-style rooms that share a bathroom and newly renovated lounges, it may be hard to believe students are returning to the tiny rooms Cary is traditionally known for.

But after the most extensive renovation in Cary Quad history, Cary’s East Unit is ready to enter the millennium

The East unit renovation, which started in the summer of 2000, gutted the historic building, replacing the 8 1/2-by-14-feet "small double" rooms with a 16-by-18 foot room with adjoining bathrooms.

"This is really a new beginning for us," said Tom Paczolt, manager of Cary Quad. "We’ve created a top of the line residential facility that will serve our residents far into the future."

Paczolt said the rooms of Cary East are very similar to the rooms of Hillenbrand Hall, which were the inspiration for the rooms in Cary.

"The format is the same (as Hillenbrand) except for a few minor differences," said Paczolt.

Some of those differences include the large walk-in closet in each Cary room and the two windows in each room of the East Unit. "Every floor has a lounge," said Paczolt, "And we have a new music room, laundry room and computer room."

Paczolt said that the laundry room is also different in the fact that it has two industrial size washing machines and industrial size dryers. "To wash bigger things, like comforters," said Paczolt.

Paczolt said the men living in the renovated unit this fall will all be upperclassmen, but that the building is not reserved solely for upperclassmen.

"Right now the building was filled with students who had applied to live here in the spring," said Paczolt.

Because returning students have seniority, they often get to pick the best rooms, he explained.

But after the renovations of Cary’s Northeast Unit, which started during the summer and are expected to be finished a year from now, the number of suite-style rooms will be doubled and the possibility of freshmen living there will increase.

Paczolt said that even with all the renovations, the historical look and feel of the original East Unit was left intact.

"We didn’t want to create a brand new looking structure," said Paczolt. "We we’re able to keep the classic collegiate feel."

N For those wanting a closer look at the Cary Quad renovations, tours will be available on the morning of Oct. 27, the Saturday of Homecoming Weekend.
