Greek leader hopes event stops rumors

Jamie Beam didn’t know a lot about sororities.

Beam, a freshman in the School of Management, did, however, once hear a story about a sorority where all the new members had to stand in their bras and underwear in front of a fraternity. Allegedly, the men in the fraternity then took permanent markers and circled the fat areas on the women's bodies.

Chase Bortone also didn’t know a lot about fraternities.

"Nakedness, that’s what we heard. Naked jumping jacks, nakedness," said Bortone, a freshman in the School of Technology.

Even though Bortone and Beam didn’t take the stories seriously, it is misinformation and rumors like this that motivated Ryan Neal and the Interfraternity Council to begin the Welcome Back Boiler Bash.

"People can get misconceived notions," said Neal, the Interfraternity Council director of recruitment. "We want to get the correct information out there."

Besides giving facts to incoming freshman, the event is also a means to welcome sophomores, juniors and seniors back to campus.

The event will take place from 12-4 p.m. Sunday at Vawter Field where anyone can find out correct information about the Greek system from Greek men and women themselves. It is co-sponsored by the Interfraternity Council and the Panhellenic Association.

The event is open to anyone interested in having a good time or finding out what the Greek system is all about, said Neal, a senior in the School of Agriculture.

Neal said that some students, who could've been outstanding Greeks, were told wrong facts. He thinks that the Welcome Back Boiler Bash will be a good opportunity to change some of that.

"That's what it's mainly about," he said. "We can answer questions, concerns and thoughts of students and parents."

Coca-Cola is sponsoring the event and 96.5 WAZY will be broadcasting live. In addition, the musical group Rendered will perform.

All of the fraternities will be bringing activities, such as miniature golf, and the sororities will have members walking around answering questions.

"It will be a carnival-type atmosphere," said Jeff Getts, a junior in the School of Agriculture and the director of public relations for the Interfraternity Council. "It's a fun time for everyone."

The Armory is the rain location for the event.
