Students should write letters to ExponentWe're here for you. The Purdue Exponent is a newspaper staffed almost entirely by students of this campus. Though each issue covers this campus, it could not exist without input from that same campus. But this page is your place to be heard directly. Letters to the editor give a focus to the issues and you a voice. That voice may only reflect your views or it may echo the voices of the entire campus. Any letters received by The Exponent will be printed in The Exponent, provided they follow a few certain rules. The Exponent will accept only 10 letters on any specific topic. Letters can be no longer than 300 words. Letters cannot be libelous. Letters cannot make personal assaults on individuals or make unproven allegations. And letters cannot be anonymous. There are no exceptions to the aforementioned guidelines. Other than that, they are free to give you a voice. We don't want to censor your opinion; we want to amplify it. Every day The Exponent columnists will give their views and opinions, but you have just as much a right to some space on this page as they do. So speak up, and don't be afraid. More often than not, people who can be affected by your arguments are reading this page. So not only do you help us by writing in, but you're also increasing the quality of public discussion. If something strikes you, write an e-mail to opinions@purdue.edu or write a letter and drop it by our offices at 460 Northwestern Ave. Just be sure to include your name, semester classification, school and a phone number so that we can confirm your view. It's that simple. A letters page can just be a place where people bicker and nit-pick at each other, but it can also be a forum for ideas great and small. Every day we're trying to make a better newspaper that reflects our campus. Help us. n Editorial Board: Keith Thomas, Erica Sagon, Tom McHenry. |
