position

One of the major topics the board of trustees will
face this year will take Purdue to the "next level," and it will be
summed up in one document.
This document, the University's strategic plan,
will create a new vision and mission state for Purdue to help better
the University. The plan, which task forces worked on during the summer,
will be presented to the board in a final draft in November.
"This fall, through November, one of the primary
topics will be the completion of the strategic plan for the University,"
said Tim McGinley, chairman of the board of trustees. "From that we
would expect a variety of other decisions to emerge, including the development
of a capital fund-raising drive and other initiatives that relate to
the conclusion of the strategic plan."
McGinley said the strategic plan is the start of
something exciting for Purdue. "We've been talking for some time about
taking Purdue to the next level, which is the goal," he said. "This
will be the year we put the specific steps in place to take us there."
The board will also be dealing with some personnel
issues this year, including meeting a new dean of the Schools of Engineering.
Richard Schwartz, the current dean, announced in October that he would
retire so he could return to teaching in the School of Electrical and
Computer Engineering. Schwartz began teaching at Purdue 36 years ago.
The search for a replacement is ongoing. "The dean
of engineering search is nearly complete and hopefully there'll be a
selection (soon)," said McGinley.
He said that this semester there would also be
some other "major" personnel choices made.
The personnel on the board changed slightly this
year as there's a new student trustee. Anna Day, a senior in the School
of Agriculture, joined the board in July and she said she was intimidated
at her first meeting.
Day will serve on the academic affairs committee,
which she said most student trustees have done in the past because they
have easy access to the student body.
"This is an exciting time to be involved with Purdue,"
McGinley said. "Whether you're a student or trustee, it's going to be
an interesting year coming up."
The Board of Trustees will have two regular meetings
this semester one on Sept. 21 and one on Nov. 2. They will also
meet for commencement in December.
