The task force committed to working on the University's
strategic plan met almost on a weekly basis this summer and is on track
to present the finished document to the Board of Trustees in November.
Rabindra Mukerjea, the director of strategic planning,
said the process is going well. "We're currently working through to
compile the whole document," said Mukerjea. "We're working quite extensively
in the area of metrics, the measurements by which you know you're making
progress in relation to all the goals and strategies."
Mukerjea said a few drafts were made this summer.
"The committee reviewed them and made changes," he said. "We're kind
of in the throws to develop one complete draft that compiles the entire
document into one full document."
That's what the task force is working toward now
creating one cohesive document from the many drafts that are
already written. Mukerjea said the plan, which can be accessed through
a link on Purdue's homepage, is close to a finished product.
"Currently, if you look at all the pieces and try
to describe various things, there's overlap among them," said Mukerjea.
"We're working to eliminate unnecessary redundancies and prepare a document
that hangs together well all the pieces."
The University began working on its strategic plan
in March and it's progressed quickly, Mukerjea said.
A clear draft will have to be done soon, as the
committee plans to reveal its work to the public in September. Mukerjea
said the strategic plan task force will host open forums next month
so Purdue faculty, students and the local community can provide feedback.
"The intention is to really hear from the community
about the plan, the elements of the plan," he said.
He said there would be a copy of the full plan
on the Web in early September, a few weeks before the community forums,
so people can become familiar with the work.
President Martin Jischke is looking forward to
the forums and public involvement, and he said he hopes a lot of people
participate in them.
Following the forums the task force will revise
the plans and then present the finished document to the Board of Trustees
in November.
"Our goal is to have the drafts finalized for the
November board meeting," said Jischke. The meeting is on Nov. 2.
Mukerjea said all those working on the project
have been dedicated and done good work. "It's remarkable, the speed
with which the task has been taken," said Mukerjea. "The task force
has been great; everybody worked very hard. I really, truly feel it's
a great task force that represents the interests of the community."
Timothy McGinley, the chairman of the Board of
Trustees, said he's looking forward to seeing the final document.
"We've periodically heard reports throughout the
year on the strategic plan," he said. "I think the entire University
community has responded to it favorably and been engaged in helping
develop it."
McGinley said he thinks the plan will really represent
a consensus of how various groups think Purdue should improve in the
coming years.
