University Senate prepares
for term
By Dave Stephens

Campus Editor
After resting over the summer, the University Senate
is ready to start the semester.
Terry Stewart, a professor of animal sciences and
the chair of the educational policy committee, said this semester should
be a productive one.
"Last year, being President Jischkes
first year, was kind of a honeymoon year," said Stewart. "This
year we will get back to more business."
Stewart said most of the standing committees didnt
meet over the summer and havent met yet this semester, but some
issues were held over from last semester.
"Our committee is still discussing whether
the withdraw/fail grade should count in the graduation index,"
said Stewart. "Right now the grade is rarely used and theres
some indication that it is not uniformly used, but thats the only
thing at the moment that we have to discuss."
Stewart said that even though there arent
any major issues for the Senate to discuss, it doesnt mean that
the Senate is doing nothing.
"The fact that there arent any real
big issues means that things are going pretty smooth at Purdue,"
said Stewart. "Nothings broken."
Linda Mason, a professor of entomology and chair
of the University Senate, said the Senate is also working on compiling
the results of a faculty survey, which was sent out to faculty last
spring.
"All the data was collected, the results are
being analyzed as we speak," said Mason. "It was a very successful
survey; we had 53 percent of faculty respond, which is very high."
Mason said the raw data from the semester should
be available early in the semester and the analyzed data will hopefully
be done by the end of the semester.
Mason also said speakers have been scheduled for
each meeting and include: Jim Almond, vice president of business services,
who will give an update on the financial situation at Purdue; Sally
Frost Mason, provost, who will discuss the Universitys strategic
plan; and President Martin Jischke, who will discuss the state of the
University.
University Senate meetings are scheduled for 2:30
p.m. on Sept. 10, Oct.15 and Nov. 19 in Stewart Center, Room 203.
