Sophomore wins event
in England
Sophomore Daniel Harris gave the best performance
of his career for his country as he won the triple jump at the USA-Great
Britain Juniors dual meet in Trent, England.
Harris, a Bridgeton, Mo., native, jumped 51-feet,
5 3/4 inches to capture the top spot in the event.
Team USA defeated Great Britain 201-176 overall,
with the U.S. men winning 106-88 and the U.S. women winning 95-88. This
was the first dual meet between junior athletes from America and Great
Britain.
"I thought it was an extremely successful meet
for both countries," said Cathy Sellers, USA Track and Field manager
of development programs. "To bring U.S. junior athletes on a trip of
this caliber gives them tremendous international competition and experience.
At USA Track and Field, we are looking to develop future Olympians,
and that starts with these athletes."
Purdue track and field coach Lissa Olson is looking
forward to coaching Harris during the 2001-02 season.
"I'm extremely proud of Daniel's performance in
his first international competition representing the United States,"
Olson said. "This says a lot about his future and his dedication to
the sport. Daniel's success will serve as a catalyst for our other athletes
competing internationally."
Purdue seniors Krissy Liphardt and Serene Ross,
along with junior Shaun Guice, will join former Purdue standout Carri
Long at the World University Games in Bejing, China, from Monday to
Aug. 31. Liphardt, an Ajax, Ontario, native, will represent Canada.
