PSG increases activities for Welcome Back Bash

Many parties to begin the new school year will be held this weekend, but possibly one of the biggest of all will be held today at the Purdue Student Union.

The Purdue Student Union Board is hosting a Welcome Back Bash beginning at 7 p.m. until midnight, and maybe later. Activities include everything from a luau dance on the front lawn to a hypnotist in the North Ballroom.

Everything is free of charge, said Heather Owen, PSUB program adviser.

At 7:30 Purdue Musical Organizations will have their First Nighter, which is the first performance for the varsity glee club this school year.

Students can also make their own music videos, which can be done solo or with friends, and a copy of the video is provided free. Three bands will play at the event – Sleep On It, Feasible and No Reason Given. Karaoke is another activity that will take place.

Students can also learn what they would look like if their head were on another person's body by getting their own "Freaky Photo," where their head is superimposed on someone else's body.

The Ballroom Dancing Club will offer dance lessons in the South Ballroom of the Union. The bowling lanes and billiard rooms will also be open to the public.

The Wiley DJ will be playing music at the luau in front of the Union and there will also be three bands performing across from Villa Pizza inside. The hypnotist will begin at 9:30 in the North Ballroom.

"One goal of the Welcome Back Bash is that it gives students options that they may not have," said Owen.

She also said another plus is that it gives clubs a chance to present themselves and let students know what they are all about.

The bash is part of the Your Choice Grant, which provides alternative programming for students in an alcohol-free setting. The bash is also part of the PMU Underground Series, which PSUB set up this year.

The Welcome Back Bash is formerly known as the Main Event. The difference between the two is that the Bash offers more activities and will last later into the night that the Main Event did, said Owen.

"It will be a good place to bring friends, to come and have a good time, relax and be entertained," said Owen.

PSUB will be hosting at least one party a month this year. In September the theme will be Flash Back, which will take students back to the 60's, 70's and 80's. In October the theme will revolve around Halloween and the Rock Horror Picture Show.
