People need to smile, avoid gloomy facesIs everyone around here depressed? Has the Purdue Sidewalk Expansion Committee claimed yet another plot of grass for the further glorification of concrete? Are the plans for changing the fountain in the engineering mall into a ten-foot pole spewing out water challenging your masculinity with feelings of inadequacy? Have you run out of girls to ask out because the three that are in your classes all turned you down last year? I honestly can't figure out why nearly everyone on this campus is so sullen. As I walk around this campus, I make eye contact with countless people. I don't go around staring at people, it just happens naturally. But nearly every time I do happen to make eye contact, the other person quickly looks away, as if embarrassed that they let their eyes stray from the tiling of advertisements plastered to the ground. Is it that uncomfortable to be remotely social? I know everyone has their share of bad days, but every day can't be that bad. A simple smile, nod or even hello would get the job done. Maybe I'm the only one who has any desire to meet new people and be sociable, but my guess is that there's at least one more person out there who is friendly too. So to that one person, the next time you see a tall guy with long, curly brown hair around campus, by all means say hello. Ted Light Junior, Schools of Engineering |
