By Purdue Sports Information
The Purdue women's soccer team defeated 24th-ranked
Marquette 4-3 on Saturday in a preseason scrimmage in Milwaukee. The
exhibition game did not count in the standings.
"We used today as both an evaluation and a competitive
environment to see where we are against a good opponent," said Purdue
coach Rob Klatte. "I think we saw some good things today and we're happy
with the outcome."
The Boilermakers found themselves down 0-2 midway
through the first of three 40-minute periods. Marquette's Kristen Jensen
scored on a penalty kick at the 13:22 mark and Kate Gordon found the
back of the net from 13 yards out at 21:04.
Purdue began its comeback as sophomore midfielder
Jenna Silverman scored on a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box
at the 29:17 mark. The Boilers tied the game at two when sophomore forward
Courtney Coppedge netted her first goal of the game on a diving header
from 7 yards out.
After Coppedge tied the game, Purdue's Arin Yarc
managed to score on another free kick at the 76:08 mark to give the
Boilermakers a 3-2 lead heading into the third and final period.
At the 96:38 mark, Marquette tied the game at three
when Laura Culhane headed the ball into the net from 6 yards out.
But Purdue received a break when Coppedge found
an opening and was rewarded a penalty kick for a Golden Eagles foul.
Her goal put Purdue up 4-3.
Purdue goalkeepers Jocelyn Cavalier, Elizabeth
Boldt and Maureen Carey each played 40 minutes. Cavalier, a junior,
started for her first time since the Boilermakers' 2000 preseason scrimmage
at Kentucky. She gave up the first two Marquette goals.
Boldt, a senior, played the second period, allowing
no scores. Carey, a freshman, played the final period and allowed the
final Marquette goal.
The Boilermakers outshot the Golden Eagles 12-10.
Purdue committed 17 fouls, while Marquette committed 15 in the physical
scrimmage.
Purdue will return to action when it hosts the
third annual Boilermaker Challenge Cup at the Purdue Varsity Soccer
Complex this weekend.
The Boilermakers open the regular season at 4 p.m.
Friday against Georgetown. Purdue will then play in either the consolation
or championship game Sunday. The third-place game is at 11 a.m. and
the championship begins at 2 p.m.
