There was a casual attitude among the players and coaches at the Purdue volleyball team's Black and Gold Scrimmage Saturday, and that wasn't a bad thing.
"Things like this are fun," Purdue coach Jeff Hulsmeyer said. "I think the atmosphere of a preseason scrimmage should be a relaxed one."
The Black Team consisting of seniors Christy Case and Lori Knicker, junior Tiffany Yoskey, sophomores Laura St. John and Jen Bova, and freshman Kim McConaha won the best-of-three match 2-1 Saturday.
The first game was close throughout, with Maegan Petersen, Joanna Lowry and the rest of the Gold Team pulling out a 30-24 win. After the second game went to a 15-all tie, the Black Team got going and won 30-23. The decisive third game was dominated by the Black Team, which took a 9-5 lead and eventually won 15-11.
Hulsmeyer was satisfied with the performance of his team, although he said he would have liked to have seen a little more attacking.
"Any coach always wants his team to be further along," Hulsmeyer said. But we're definitely in a good position at the moment."
The three freshmen players Leah Wischmeier, Lyndsey Phillips and McConaha fared well in their Boilermaker debuts. Wischmeier passed well and had several uncontested kills; Phillips used her 6-foot-4 height and reach to make a lot of blocks; and McConaha attacked and served well for the winners.
Hulsmeyer said the play of Yoskey, a 6-2 middle hitter, was impressive also.
"Tiffany played really well," Hulsmeyer said. "She's really come along."
The Boilers have also come a long way since the start of training camp.
"It was hot and humid, but we're in good shape," Hulsmeyer said.
