Price of student insurance increases

By Rachael Conley
Staff Writer

Students pursuing insurance coverage through Purdue will find prices for undergraduate plans increased between $13 and $144 this year for the purchase of certain plans.

"Premiums are going up, insurance costs are going up and they're going up for everyone," said Janet Burkenpass, graduate staff insurance coordinator. "The higher the claims the higher the premiums."

Plan One's cost was originally $435 and has now increased to $486 for the fall semester. The charge for full year coverage has increased from $1,107 to $1,251.

Plan Two has increased from $276 to $289 for the fall semester, and from $707 to $743 for the full year coverage.

There are very few changes in the plans themselves, Burkenpass said the only changes are in allergy and acne medication coverage. These medications will now only be covered in Plan One at the Purdue Pharmacy.

Plan One still has the most extensive coverage out of the four plans for undergraduate students. The coverage consists of a $250 deductible, a $10 co-pay for prescriptions, and now the allergy and acne medications at the Purdue Pharmacy.

Plan Two has a $500 deductible and the same $10 co-pay for prescriptions. This plan does, however, have a maximum of $200 on prescriptions.

Both plans cover a large percent of customary charges, with Plan One covering 80 percent and Plan Two covering 70 percent.

In regard to prescription charges, if a student visits the Purdue pharmacy, the $10 price for prescriptions applies.

However, if the student visits a pharmacy other than Purdue's, he or she can send the prescription receipt to the insurance company for reimbursement for costs over $10.

There are four undergraduate plans altogether, but the other two plans are very similar to those described previously. The difference lies in the student's eligibility for the plans.

Two are strictly for international students, and two are for domestic students. All students not covered by their parents' insurance are eligible for these plans.
