Instructional program doubles classes

By Kelsey VanArsdall

The number of programs in Supplemental Instruction has doubled this year from four to eight classes.

Supplemental Instruction, a program at Purdue founded by the Lilly Endowment, gives undergraduate students a chance to learn and help teach at the same time.

The program consists of undergraduates who have taken a course at Purdue and done well in it, and then want to help other students who are enrolled in the class for the first time learn the material and succeed.

The Supplemental Instruction program is a helpful situation for all students because those learning the material for the first time get to work with students in a more casual environment. Also, the student instructors, who usually work 10 to 12 hours a week and hold office hours, are paid.

"(Supplemental Instruction) is a win-win situation for all because it helps improve cash flow, time management and grades for those involved," said Ethel Swartzendruber, the program supervisor.

The program consisted previously of only four classes — Biology 203, "Human Anatomy and Physiology;" Math 153, "Algebra and Trigonometry I;" Physics 152, "Mechanics;" and Psychology 120, "Elementary Psychology."

The newly added classes are Earth and Atmospheric Sciences 104, "Oceanography;" Economics 210, "Principles of Economics;" History 103, "Introduction to Medieval World History;" and Psychology 201, "Introduction to Quantitative Topics in Psychology I."

"(Supplemental Instruction) is an opportunity to impact students that isn’t common; most undergrads don’t get this kind of experience," said Matt Kelm, a sophomore in the School of Pharmacy.

The Supplemental Instruction instructors enjoy helping other students.

"The most rewarding thing for me is students voicing their appreciation for the way I have helped them, it really makes me feel good," said Kristin Buck, an senior in the School of Science.
