Purdue meets goals of enrollment plan

Purdue's West Lafayette campus is home to 38,208 students this fall, which is a 337 increase in students from last year.

Despite a slight increase in enrollment from last year, Purdue is still meeting its goal of reducing undergraduate enrollment and attracting better students, said Douglas Christiansen, assistant vice president for enrollment services.

MIT professor to discuss missile defense system

The United States Department of Defense's $60 billion missile defense system — designed to shoot down long range missiles and safeguard the United States from nuclear attack — may not be all it is cracked up to be

In fact, it may not work at all according to one man.

In a recent speech, President George W. Bush declared his administration's intention to continue research into the missile defense system and even to expand the program to include sea-based launchings.

An outspoken critic of the project, Theodore A. Postol, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor and Star Wars expert, will speak on campus Thursday afternoon about the impracticality of this system.

Global Fest provides cultural atmosphere

Students will have the chance to view a Japanese tea ceremony, attend a Ukrainian egg painting session, learn to use chopsticks, sample Indonesian food or watch Turkish dancers perform this Friday and Saturday.

West Lafayette is sponsoring Global Fest 2001 from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Morton Community Center.

Global Fest, which usually draws a crowd around 4,000 people each year, celebrates many of the international cultures represented in the Greater Lafayette Area.
