Local club hosts guitarist Dave Hole this weekend

By Emily Baldauf
Senior Writer

Local residents and students will have to the opportunity to see one of the greatest slide blues guitarists at an upcoming concert scheduled for this weekend at the Knickerbocker Saloon in downtown Lafayette.

"This is just a great opportunity for us to bring someone that I consider an outstanding talent to a beautiful, cozy club like the Knickerbocker," club owner Nick Vukas said.

Dave Hole has performed at the Knickerbocker twice before, once in 1994 and 1996. Although the crowds were not as large as organizers had hoped for, his talent and passion on the stage intrigued the audience.

"He truly enjoyed the club, the atmosphere and the crowd support," Vukas said. "At the clubs is where these types of shows can be really exciting and fun because the feel is so much different."

Although those who have seen Hole perform in the past have always raved about his live shows, the Lafayette market simply hasn’t been strong enough in recent years to make Lafayette a stop for Hole’s international tours.

"We haven’t booked any national acts in four years because our market is not quite hip enough to appreciate what can happen," Vukas said. "This show is a very critical show because it is the first show of the school year and the first big show in awhile."

Although Vukas is unsure of the crowds Hole will bring, Marc Lipkin from Alligator Records promises an outstanding live performance. Lipkin describes Hole’s music as "blues music with a rock ‘n’ roll heart."

"He’s really one of the most talented blues slide players in the world," Lipkin said.

"I would say the chance is 98 percent that you will walk away feeling satisfied and impressed," Vukas said.

Vukas also points out that even those who have never heard Hole’s music will most likely enjoy the show.

"Even if you’re not familiar with his music or blues is not your favorite music – try it, you make like it," he said. "This concert is a safe bet. If there is anybody not satisfied with the show I will give them their money back because that’s how confident I am that this will be a great show."

Dave Hole will perform at a special 8:30 p.m. showtime on September 5 at the Knickerbocker Saloon in downtown Lafayette. Tickets are $6 and are available at the door.
