Club hosts cultural music events

Musically minded students can get a view of symphonic music from another culture through the Indian Classical Music Association of Purdue.

Formed in 1989, the Indian Classical Music Association of Purdue focuses on the performing of traditional Indian music through various concerts spread throughout the year. These concerts feature eminent classical musicians along with musically minded students on campus.

The club also organizes cultural activities and Indian festivals and performs at scheduled events and concerts.

Club president Santhoji Katare, a graduate student, said, "This club is a meeting of the like minded here at Purdue who are interested in furthering their talents or who enjoy listening to music."

The music featured is mainly North Indian music, which is popularly called Hindustani, and South Indian music, which is called Carnatic. The music association also encourages western symphonic music, which they play during concerts.

"For this semester we have three big events planned and we encourage all who are interested to join," said Katare.

The club's meetings — called Akriti — are held once a month. Here members gather to listen to performances by Lafayette residents, practice themselves and discuss music and art. The group then showcases this local talent through concerts held every semester.

The club has also been philanthropic in the past year. They raised $13,000, which they donated to aid the earthquake victims in Gujarat, India who were devastated in late January.

The group's first meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Chemical Engineering, Room 002.
