Homosexuality proves unsanitary, irresponsibleYour recent editorial decrying the loss of credibility by a campus homosexual activist needs to be reconsidered. You lamented that homosexuality's momentum would be checked by this unfortunate loss of reputation. But a cursory review of the objective evidence leads rational persons toward a conclusion that homosexuality is, in fact, unsanitary, and irresponsible. This aggregate statistical picture you call a stereotype but the inference from data is rather hard to ignore. Consider that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that from 1994 to 1997 the proportion of homosexuals reporting using condoms "always" for anal sex declined from 69.6 percent to 60 percent. Whereas AIDS education has certainly increased the knowledge of the community from '94 to '97, behavior has headed opposite knowledge. The center further reported that 45 percent of homosexuals reporting having had unprotected anal intercourse during the previous six months didn't know the HIV status of all their partners. Further, Bell and Weinberg, in their study of homosexuality, found 43 percent of white male homosexuals had sex with 500 or more partners. 500! This is a short letter and all the necessary facts take more than space allows. But the reader could easily begin with these and quickly discover that it is not a stereotype to say that homosexual behavior leads to a culture of disease and irresponsibility. Let's consider listening to the homosexual newspaper The Washington Blade. They report that Human Papillomavirus infection "was almost universal among HIV-positive men, and that 60 percent of HIV-negative men carried HPV..." in San Francisco. Sixty percent. However, the bottom line comes from the International Journal of Epidemiology which examined a major Canadian urban area: "Under even the most liberal assumptions, gay and bisexual men in this urban centre are now experiencing a life expectancy similar to that experienced by all men in Canada in the year 1871." They recorded a lifetime loss of eight to 20 years. Tolerance without truth...truly is hatred. Andrew S. Longman Purdue staff |
