Dangerous intersection needs safer crossingsOn Friday I witnessed, for the second time in the past few years, a pedestrian being hit by a car at the same spot on campus. The man, a friend of mine, was crossing University Street from the sidewalk west of the Math building to the garage. He was knocked to the ground, but is recovering well at this time. This crossing is very dangerous. I have had to dodge vehicles myself on numerous occasions, and I now use the tunnel to LAEB much more often to avoid the hazard. I too have woven my car among the crossers as I drive north from the garage on University Street, and in my haste, have endangered more than one pedestrian. Though the street is one way going north, I look north whenever I cross, as bicyclists often come down the street the wrong way, heading south. A solution to this hazard might be to shut the street off between the garage and the Computer Science building. This would allow a safe zone for pedestrians. My more modest and immediate suggestion to all is to be cautious and vigilant when crossing and driving there. A G Rud Purdue Staff |
