Volleyball team loses three times in Seattle

By Purdue Sports Information

SEATTLE — Several strong efforts couldn't help the Purdue volleyball team from getting off to its worst start since 1991 when the team began the season 0-4 and finished 13-16.

The Boilers (0-3) lost all three of their matches this weekend at the Point Husky Invitational at the University of Washington.

"We faced some of the best teams in the country this weekend," Purdue coach Jeff Hulsmeyer said. "Although our efforts didn’t result in wins, we found out a lot about our team and its abilities. We look forward to implementing those things into our practices to help us in next weekend’s tournament in Oxford, Ohio."

On Friday, the team lost its season opener 29-31, 25-30, 26-30 to Texas. Freshmen Lyndsey Phillips and Leah Wischmeier led the way for Purdue with seven kills each.

Sophomore Jen Bova had 28 assists in her debut as starting setter. Classmate Laura St. John led Purdue with a career high of 14 digs.

The Boilers began Saturday morning with an 18-30, 30-26, 20-30, 30-18 loss to Washington.

Senior Maegan Petersen led Purdue in kills with nine and digs with 13. Sophomore Eryn Leach turned in eight kills and led both squads with eight blocks.

On Saturday evening, the Boilers lost 23-30, 30-21, 30-26, 20-30 to No. 11 BYU on Saturday. Wischmeier proved she deserved her first career start with 17 kills. Phillips had 10 kills and led Purdue with 10 digs.

Purdue has this week to get ready for this weekend's Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio, where the Boilers will face South Carolina, Illinois State and Miami (Ohio).
