With Purdue about to announce some of the largest
gifts it's ever received, it has launched a campaign to bring attention
to all aspects of the University as well as those gifts.
"The idea is to have a period when we really focus
on having people find out more about Purdue and showcase some of the
exciting things Purdue is doing," said Joe Bennett, vice president of
University Relations.
On Tuesday Purdue launched its yearlong campaign
Discover Purdue.
The name for the campaign comes from Discovery
Park the research park scheduled to be built next year in areas
now occupied by the Purdue Village.
Murray Blackwelder, senior vice president for advancement,
said the University chose to name the campaign after the park because
it's the newest thing at the University.
To go along with the theme, the cover of the Purdue
phonebook will feature an artist's rendering of the park. Banners for
the campaign have been hung along State Street and Northwestern Avenue.
Bennett said the University is hoping the campaign
will help Purdue alumni, the state of Indiana and students at Purdue
rediscover what is going on at Purdue.
Blackwelder said major announcements are scheduled
for October and November and more will happen throughout the year. "This
will be calling attention to things that maybe wouldn't have gotten
as much attention in the past. So many new things are happening here,
it's an exciting place to be,"
Blackwelder said, "These announcements are some
of the largest in the history of the University."
Starting Friday, Purdue will make a major announcement
each day leading up to the home football game Sept.15 against Notre
Dame. The first announcement will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday in Fowler
Hall in the Stewart Center and concerns plans for Discovery Park and
the new Nanotechnology Center that will be housed there.
Purdue president Martin Jischke will announce the
other facilities to be placed inside the park.
Gov. Frank O'Bannon, Sen. Evan Bayh, D-Ind., and
members of the Indiana State Budget Committee will be present at the
announcement, which will be followed by a ceremonial groundbreaking
in the North Ballroom of the Purdue Memorial Union.
Some of the announcements during the next week
called Discover Purdue Week will include gifts for pesticide
patents, electronic equipment and real estate for the School of Agriculture.
