Sports nutritionist returns to Purdue

By Rachael Conley
Staff Writer

Rachel Geik is coming home.

Geik, the new Nutrition Fitness and Health program coordinator and sports nutritionist, said that after a three-year absence from Purdue it "feels like I’m sort of coming home."

"I'm from Indiana so I wasn't upset to be coming back to the area," she said.

Geik received her bachelors in nutrition, fitness, and health here a few years ago and, after three years at Texas Women’s University, has returned to Purdue for her first job out of college.

This is an incredible job for someone just out of school, she said.

As Purdue’s new sports nutritionist, Geik will be working with Purdue athletes. As their nutritionist, she will be analyzing their information and working with the athletes to create nutritional plans to help them achieve their goals.

For example, she will be working with some members of the football team to create a plan to help them gain or lose weight, she said.

She will also discuss eating disorders and the results they produce with the athletes to safeguard their health.

As the nutritionist, Geik will be working close to home. While she attended school here, she was a part of the women’s crew.

Geik rowed in a boat that finished second in the Henley Royal Regatta, which is held in Thames, England. The regatta hosts championship teams from around the world said Dave Kucik, crew head coach.

Geik’s team was only seconds behind the best British crew team in the country, said Kucik.

He also agreed with Geik about her first job out of college. "I think it’s a great opportunity for her," he said.

"I just hope to bring some new ideas," said Geik. "I’m new for the department and fresh from another department."

Geik is cheerful and energetic and Kucik added, "beyond a great love for the institution and rowing, for what she’s bringing to the department, if she brings the same energy to what she’s doing, the University’s found themselves a gold mine."
