Student groups can raise funds cleaning

Due to the renovation of Ross-Ade Stadium, additional exterior parking lots have to be used for home games — parking lots that need to be cleaned.

The current phase of renovation for Ross-Ade will relocate Steven C. Beering Drive. Because of this, spaces have been made at Slayter Hill and Tower Acres.

"We're venturing out into other areas and that obviously means we need to clean up those other areas," said Bob Hallas, superintendent of outdoor athletic facilities.

Each Sunday after a home football game, student organizations clean the stadium grounds and areas around campus used as parking lots.

He said that with the addition of more parking lots, as well as branching to areas east of Mackey Arena in the city, more student groups are needed to participate.

"Slayter Hill alone is going to be a challenge for us," said Hallas.

Twelve student groups who account for 150 to 160 workers are signed up. A total of 250 workers are needed. Hallas said he would like to have that number by Wednesday. Any student or community organization can sign up to clean after the six home games this season.

Hallas said the cleanups are great fund-raising opportunities for the groups — the groups earn $6 an hour for each worker. Some of the groups that participate are Alpha Phi Omega, Tau Beta Sigma and the Evans Scholars.

Matthew Snyder, president of the Evans Scholars, said the cleanups pay money for something that does not require hard work.

Hallas said the students have a lot of fun and on occasion bring breakfast for others. Snyder said the students receive the opportunity to see parts of the stadium and campus they normally would not see.

They start at 8 a.m. each Sunday after every home football game and clean for three to four hours, regardless of weather.

"We have to get it done on that Sunday whether it rains or shines," said Hallas.

All equipment — except raincoats — is provided.

Hallas said the workers ensure that everything is picked up so the areas are clean and do not pose a safety risk for anyone walking through later.

• Student or community organizations can sign up by contacting Bob Hallas either by phone at 494-3250 or by e-mail at rhallas@purdue.edu.
