NAACP leader uses humor to discuss race, bigotry

In front of a packed Loeb Playhouse audience, Kweisi Mfume, president and chief executive officer of the NAACP, addressed people of all ages, races and sexes Thursday night.

In the speech, "Race: Exploring America's Agenda," Mfume covered issues surrounding civil rights, political empowerment, educational excellence and economic development.

Greeted with a standing ovation, he loosened up the audience with a couple of jokes. As the laughter died down, he told the audience they were gathered there to laugh, "but also to reason and to think."

Men walk to create awareness of sexual assault

ADDRESSING THE ISSUE: Steve McAllister, of Bay City, Mich., spoke on campus Thursday night as part of the group One in Four, which promotes sexual assault awareness. Three members of the group are walking from San Francisco to Washington, D.C., to raise awareness of their message.

Most students would walk a friend home if they had a fear that a sexual assault might occur.

Most students would call the police if they saw someone attempting sexual assault.

But how many students would walk more than 2,500 miles and spend three and a half months on the road to educate college students about the facts and myths of sexual assault?

On Thursday night, four college-aged men from the University of Central Michigan took time from their cross-country tour to talk about sexual assault.

Dean hopes to improve engineering

The new dean of the Schools of Engineering said she would like to see the Schools of Engineering be ranked in the top five nationally and she would like to see it done in a short period of time.

Linda Katehi, associate dean of academic affairs in the college of engineering at the University of Michigan, was named the new John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering on Thursday. Richard Schwartz, current dean of the Schools of Engineering, has reached the mandatory retirement age for senior Purdue administrators — 65.

The new appointment is effective Jan. 1, pending approval from the Purdue Board of Trustees.

Katehi said, "I'm very excited to play a role in the future of the University and the Schools of Engineering.
