matches
By Purdue Sports Information
OXFORD, Ohio The Purdue volleyball team
lost three matches at the Miami Best Western Classic, continuing its
worst start in school history.
"We cant make any excuses," said
coach Jeff Hulsmeyer, whose team is now 0-6. "Although we have
been facing some very tough opponents, the bottom line is that we arent
executing the ball on our side of the court. No matter who we play,
weve got to focus on our side of the court."
In their last match of the tournament, the Boilermakers
lost to Miami in four games, 22-30, 30-27, 23-30 and 24-30.
Senior Maegan Petersen had a season high of 16
kills in Purdues effort. Sophomore Joanna Lowry and all-tournament
team selection Lyndsey Phillips both had 11.
Purdue could not overcome an early 9-14 deficit
in Game 1. The Boilermakers got as close as three points at 21-24, but
Miami held its lead and went on to win 30-22. The Boilers came back
from being down 6-1 to win Game 2 30-27. Purdue dropped Game 3, but
came out strong in Game 4. The Boilermakers took a quick 6-2 lead and
forged out farther to take a seven point advantage, bringing the score
to 14-7. After the score was tied at 23, the Redhawks scored six unanswered
to take a 28-23 lead. Purdue made good on one Miami error before losing
30-24.
The Boilers lost to Illinois State, 35-37, 20-30,
19-30, on Saturday.
After trailing 20-22, the Boilermakers scored five
unanswered to secure a 25-22 advantage. Illinois State answered with
a 5-2 run of its own to knot the game at 27. After a series of exchanges
and game-point opportunities by each squad, the score was tied at 35.
The Redhawks got in two quick kills to take the win.
The Boilermakers opened play with a loss to No.
21 South Carolina, 30-26, 30-27, 30-27, Friday.
Freshman Leah Wicshmeier led the effort with 11
kills and 10 digs in the first double-double of her collegiate career.
In addition, she committed only two errors on 26 attempts for a .346
hitting percentage.
Petersen recorded 10 kills, while sophomore Eryn
Leach was good for eight. Sophomore setter Jen Bova had 36 assists and
nine digs.
Although Purdue only committed six errors on 36
attempts in Game 2, it was not enough to hold off South Carolina. The
Boilers fell 30-27. The Boilermakers lost by the same score in Game
3.
The Boilermakers' next match is at 7 p.m. Tuesday
in Valparaiso, Ind., against Valparaiso.
