State senator to address railroad initiative

By Heather Mangold
City Editor

Sen. Ron Alting, R-22nd, is coming to Lafayette today to better educate the public on development of a high-speed rail network in Indiana.

At 5 p.m.today, Alting will visit the Lafayette Depot, in Riehle Plaza, to discuss the network.

"This is a great opportunity for citizens of Lafayette to come out and hear about the Midwest Regional Passenger Rail System and allow their opinions on the issue to be heard," said Alting in a press release. "As a member of the Rail Corridor Safety Committee, I will be interested in hearing about this project and gaining community feedback."

According to the release, Indiana is among nine states in the rail initiative, which is an ongoing effort to develop and expand access to an improved passenger rail system. Other states participating are Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Nebraska and Wisconsin.

National and local concerns on rail transportation have resulted in the designation of three high-speed rail routes through Indiana, according to the release.
