Purdue has received over $585,000 worth of electronic
testing equipment from the United States Marines and other government
agencies.
The gift, announced as part of Discover Purdue
week, is for Purdue's School of Technology and Purdue's Statewide Technology
Program.
"Our School of Technology is without peer," said
Purdue President Martin Jischke. "It leads the country in number of
bachelor degrees and is the largest program in the country."
The equipment gift comes from a program created
by Lt. Col. Marie Juliano, who created the program to donate outdated
military equipment to universities and technical colleges.
"I wanted to put tax payer's money back into the
community," said Juliano. "We are stewards of public funds not only
when buying this equipment but when we dispose of it."
Juliano said she wanted the Marine Corps to form
a partnership with the institutions that help develop the skills that
Marines can use.
Terry O'Connor, an associate professor of electrical
engineering technology, is coordinating the distribution of the gift
from the Statewide Technology Program's department in New Albany, Ind.
"The Marines have a saying, 'We are the best at
what we do,'" said O'Connor. "Here in the School of Technology we also
believe that we are the best at what we do."
O'Connor said when he first heard about the Marine
program, he was excited.
"When they asked how much to send, I told them
to send it all," said O'Connor.
Due to Tuesday's terrorist attacks in New
York and Washington D.C., University officials have canceled the remaining
announcements for Discover Purdue Week.
