Open-mic event to return to larger location this fall

By Emily Baldauf

A favorite Purdue Student Union Board program will return this fall, giving even more Purdue students the opportunity to show off their talents on stage.

The first Amaturation of the fall semester will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. on Sept. 12 at the La Posada in the Purdue Memorial Union.

Amaturation was started last spring semester after a few students came to the Purdue Student Union Board with the idea of an open-mic night for students.

"There were no open-mic events like this on campus," concert committee director and a junior in computer science Matt Magurany said. "I thought it was a good idea to have an outlet like this on campus for students."

Six Amaturations were held last spring that included live performances by students that had talents in a variety of areas including comedy, music and poetry.

The events became so popular that by the end of the semester as many as 100 people came to enjoy the local talent.

Because of the success of the program last year and the popular demand among the students, the Purdue Student Union Board has decided to bring back Amaturation for another semester.

"It’s still the only event like this on campus, and I think we all had a lot of fun doing it last semester," Magurany said.

"I think it has become so popular because it gives students that opportunity to show their talents to other students on campus," adviser Heather Owen said. "A lot of students wanted this and people still want to do this."

Because of the growing popularity of the biweekly talent shows, Amaturation will be moving to a bigger location this semester.

Now Purdue students who are looking for that opportunity to perform will have the chance to perform on the La Posada stage in the Purdue Memorial Union.

"Now we’ll have a larger stage area to use, and we’re hoping to draw more people with the larger location," Owen said.

Students who are interested in exhibiting their talent can sign up to perform prior to the start of each show.

"It’s open for any student who wants to come out and perform," Owen said. "Anybody interested can come in that night and will get to perform."

More Amaturations will be held throughout the semester on Sept. 26, Oct. 3, Oct. 17, Oct. 31, Nov. 14 and Dec. 5.

Amaturation is open to the public, and admission into the event is free. For more information call the Purdue Student Union Board office at 494-8976 or visit www.purdue.edu/psub.
