Strange noises to fill air
when boilers restart
From Staff Reports
People on and around campus today may hear some
loud, unusual sounds during the late afternoon or early evening, but
should not be alarmed.
A power-generating boiler at the Wade Utility Plant
at the south end of campus is being restarted after routine maintenance.
"It's a routine activity we do every fall," said
Joe Mikesell, director of utilities at Purdue. "Its an unusual
noise and we thought people might react badly to it, especially after
this week's events."
Micksell said he isn't sure how loud the steam
release is, but said that it can probably be heard from the middle of
campus.
"It sounds like a loud hiss or roar and usually
lasts up to a minute or so," he said.
Mikesell said the steam releases are a common occurrence
at the utility plant. The boiler was originally supposed to be restarted
on Tuesday but was delayed to help avoid confusion in the area.
