Student musician to release rap album, video for airplay

Brandon Paschal leads a phenomenal double life.

As Paschal, he is a senior in the Schools of Engineering who gets excellent grades. As Socrates, he is one of many who dream, but one of few that act.

Socrates is Paschal's musically inclined rap persona that lays down tracks, compiles albums and, this Saturday, releases a video for possible nationwide airplay.

"This is a big thing for him — he's been working so hard," says Eric Armstrong, a senior in the Schools of Engineering, Paschal's friend and public relations coordinator.

Paschal created his record company, Philosophic Productions, using his own funds. He began recording with a computer program and a microphone, and was blown away at the sound of his own voice.

He is involved in music because of the spiritual satisfaction that it gives him rather than the possible financial reimbursement

The video "Fast or Slow" is a track from Socrates' second album, "Heaven Sent." The song alternates from fast and upbeat to slow and thoughtful verse.

"You can be in deep but at the same time have a party track," said Paschal.

The video was shot in July at Indianapolis and West Lafayette locations with the aid of TB Digital Productions and director Kevin Bertoline.

The video's concept is a confrontation of Paschal's studious side and his more adventurous, sociable side. The result of their turmoil is friendship and the pair winds up at a massive party with more than two hundred extras.

"Friends told friends — it blew my mind. There's no question," commented Paschal on the video and those who helped him with its production.

"We appreciate the people coming out to support what he is doing," said Armstrong.

Many Indiana Pacers Pacemates, members of the Pacers' official dance team, showed up to help with choreography and be in the video.

"They were so cooperative, so willing; they added a level of professionalism," said Paschal of the Pacemates.

With post-production almost complete, Paschal admits that the prospect of seeing himself on the television is one that makes him nervous.

In celebration of the completion of the video, Paschal welcomes friends and fans at 10 p.m. Saturday to Riehle Bros. in Lafayette. The cover is $1 before 11 p.m. and $3 before 12:30 a.m.
