More than 6,500 attend campus memorial service
By Laura Pelner More than 6,500 people from the Purdue community joined together Friday to seek solace and support from those around them. These people came to an on-campus memorial service that filled the Elliott Hall of Music, the Class of 1950 Lecture Hall and the basement and first floor lounges of the Purdue Memorial Union. The service was held in conjunction with the National Day of Prayer and Remembrance to honor the lives that were cut short and families that were torn apart Tuesday morning in the tragedies that ravaged New York City, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania. The service was filmed and shown on Boiler Television as well.
Firemen collect donations to aid Red Cross
West Lafayette firemen said it made them proud to see the outpouring response from citizens donating to the American Red Cross over the weekend. "We get an awful lot of 'God bless you's' and 'I love you's'," said West Lafayette Fire Chief Ron Ford. "This has been totally awesome." On Friday, Saturday and Sunday the firemen of West Lafayette stood at the intersection of State Road 52 and Salisbury Street holding out their boots for donations for the victims of Tuesday's apparent terrorist attacks. They were joined by the fire departments of Lafayette and Delphi. "I think everybody wanted to do something at this period of time," said Ford. "This gives the individual an avenue to help."
Ribbons show support from students
Twelve dollars can go a long way. That is all Cari Mast needed to buy 2,400 ft of yellow ribbon that was used Friday afternoon to honor those who perished in Tuesday's terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania. Following the campus wide Prayer and Remembrance Service, students from various student organizations handed out strands of the yellow ribbon by the Class of 1939 Water Sculpture and tied them around trees and pillars on campus. Mast, a senior in the School of Management and president of the Mortar Board, said she had hoped to have a couple of people help her in distributing the ribbon, but more than expected turned out to help. |
