Purdue goes 1-1 over weekend

By Purdue Sports Information

The Purdue women's soccer lost 2-1 to Northwestern on Sunday, as the Wildcats scored with two seconds left to play in regulation. The Boilermakers fall to 4-3-0 (1-1-0 Big Ten), while Northwestern improves to 2-3-1 (1-0-1 Big Ten).

"Today we put in a good effort, which is the important part," said Purdue head coach Rob Klatte. "Going 1-2 on the week is disappointing, but we are even with our results on the weekend and I have confidence in our team that we'll come back and play some good soccer."

At the 14:23 mark, Katie Redmond found freshman forward Lauren Sesselmann for a breakaway goal.

Purdue continued its physical play, but the Wildcats tied the game at one.

The game stayed tied at one and overtime seemed evident. But with less than 20 seconds left, Purdue committed a foul just outside the box and Northwestern was awarded a free kick. Purdue set up its wall with less than ten seconds left and the Wildcats kicked off just in time.

The ball made its way through the goal with two seconds remaining.

The Boilermakers outshot the Wildcats, 9-7.

In the goal, junior Jocelyn Cavalier started and tallied two saves in the first half. Senior Elizabeth Boldt took over at the break and notched one save.

Purdue opened Big Ten play with a 3-0 victory over Wisconsin Friday night in Madison. The Boilermakers scored three goals during a first half scoring barrage and cruised to victory over the Badgers.

Redmond opened the scoring with a goal at the game’s 6:50 mark on a pass from Sesselmann. Purdue tallied their second goal of the night on a 40-yard free kick that was deflected at the six-yard box. Sesselmann got credit for the goal and Jessica Baumhoff recorded the assist. Annette Kent added the Boilermakers third goal of the half at the 29:33 mark from Lori Arnold.

Lauren Monica started in goal for Purdue, making five saves in 74 minutes of action. Boldt played the final 16 minutes in net and recorded three saves.

The Boilermakers will be back in action on Friday and Sunday when they host Penn State and Ohio State.
