Jerusalem women to share
facts

Everybody knows that Israelis and Palestinians
dont get along.
Or so they think.
That is why three women from the city of Jerusalem
have been traveling the country dispelling the myths and discussing
the possibilities for peace in their war-torn country.
These women, representing three faiths and two
nationalities, will speak at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Stewart Center Room
206. The event is sponsored by a variety of local religious organizations,
Purdue's Women's and Jewish study programs, the political science department,
Partners for Peace and the Lafayette Committee for Israeli/Palestinian
Peace and Justice.
"I think that it will be interesting to hear from
people who live in Jerusalem," said Shelia Rosenthal, a member of the
Lafayette committee. "It's an area with a lot of religious significance
for several religions and it has been the scene of a lot of fighting
for thousands of years."
The speakers include Rawan Damen, a 22-year-old
Palestinian Muslim and a recent graduate of Birzeit University in the
Israel's West Bank; Michal Shohat, a 48-year-old Israeli Jew who has
two children serving in the Israeli military; and Jean Zaru, a 61-year-old
Palestinian Quaker whose brother disappeared in Lebanon in 1976 while
fighting for Palestine liberation.
"The only reason these women are coming is for
the opportunity to speak to the American people and to share the facts
as they see them," said Adele Colella, a member of Partners for Peace.
"These women aren't politicians, they didn't come here with a set agenda,
they didnt know each other before coming to these talks."
Rosenthal said the women's talk is especially important
because of the recent terrorist attacks that happened in New York and
Washington, D.C.
"I believe there's a strong correlation with our
government's policy dealing with the Palestinian and Israeli conflict
and the attacks that have happened," said Rosenthal. "I think that our
policies in Israel and Palestine is one that a lot of people will be
looking at as we become more involved in that area."
