Number of companies at career fair declines

The Liberal Arts Career and Internship Fair returns to Purdue this year with fewer companies than last year.

As of Monday afternoon, 35 companies were expected to be present at this year's fair; last year there were 60 participating companies. This decrease may be due to the recent events that happened in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.

"We did have some cancellations due to the events," said Jamin Rexing, president of Liberal Arts Student Council.

The numbers were down before the terrorist events because companies are not recruiting as many students as before due to the economy being low, Rexing said.

The number of companies partaking in the fair is also much lower than the number of companies that participated in the Industrial Roundtable two weeks ago.

It might have to do with the fact that there are many companies that have already been here with other fairs, and liberal arts degrees are so diverse that companies don't have specific recruitment like they do in engineering and technology, said Rexing.

Another reason for the small size of the fair may be a lack of funding.

The Liberal Arts Student Council is completely and independently paying for the fair, said Matt Indre, career opportunities director of the Liberal Arts Student Council.

All the money that the Liberal Arts Student Council gets from dues and fundraising goes to the fair. It doesn't get funds from anyone else like the other fairs, he said.

"We do have good companies coming this year though," said Indre.

The fair will include companies such as the Children's Museum, Six Flags Great America, Northlight Theatre and the Mental Health Association in Tippecanoe County. The Indiana House Democrat Caucus and the Indiana Senate will also be present.

"It's a broad spectrum of what people are looking for," said Indre.

There are different things for different people, said Rexing.

The fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Purdue Memorial Union South Ballroom.
