Bush shows aptitude with actions, judgmentI am writing in reference to associate professor William McLauchlan's opinions expressed in the article "Professors analyze president." Implying that a southern accent indicates a lack of rational judgment or intelligence is absurd and is based solely on a stereotype. His arguments appear to be based 100 percent on opinion. McLauchlan presented no evidence to support his claim that President Bush is not going to listen to advice. The facts support the opposite. President Bush has surrounded himself with very knowledgeable and experienced people so that he can use their knowledge and experience as base for making decisions. If anything, the president has shown that he is listening to advice by not launching a retaliation immediately after the attack. Hastily launching an attack sounds more "good old boyish" than gathering evidence and establishing a coalition before any attack is made. McLauchlan's criticism of Bush's actions on the day of the attack, "he was running around like a deer in headlights," is the most aggravating aspect of his argument. Did he want Bush to stay put in Florida? The terrorists probably knew where he was. It is much harder to hit a dynamic target than a static one. A deer does not run in headlights, it freezes. That is why it gets hit by a car! Ryan Kurtz Purdue Alumnus |
