Red Cross should not affiliate itself with bandThis is a copy of a letter I have just emailed to the Tippecanoe County Chapter of the American Red Cross. I've been unable to find an email address for "Lucky's Playhouse", or they'd be hearing from me directly too... I was disgusted as I walked across the Purdue University campus this morning to find posters advertising a "benefit show" with proceeds to go "to American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund," by a "rock and roll" band called THE ROHYPNOLS. In case you don't know, rohypnol is the name of the (illegal) drug commonly known as the "date rape drug". Does the American Red Cross really want its name on this "benefit show"? Aren't the fine people of the Lafayette area doing their part by contributing directly to the Red Cross and other legitimate relief organizations? We are already reeling from the effects of terror from outside our borders. Why in the name of all that is good would we want to do our fundraising with a band that celebrates violence against women by their very name? I can only hope that the Tippecanoe County Chapter had no prior knowledge of this event, or my faith in the American Red Cross will be severely shaken. Bonnie Douglas Purdue Staff |
