David Moore recently received the American Statistical Associations Founders Award for everything he has given to the field of statistics.
"Hes an extraordinary guy," said Mary Ellen Bock, head and professor of statistics.
Moore is the man behind many projects in the field. He created both the course Statistics 113, "Statistics and Society," and wrote the textbook. This textbook is one of around seven that are bestsellers and models for other authors of similar books, said Bock.
Moore also collaborated with television personnel to create a tele-course in statistics shown on stations for corporations of public broadcasting, such as PBS.
More was one of the first people to do a good job explaining statistics without all the formulas and quantitative stuff, said Bock. He created a sort of statistics for poets.
"He made all sorts of breakthroughs on how to present statistical material," she said. "He was really a pioneer."
Moores recent award from the American Statistical Association is added to a list of previous awards and recognitions former president of the association, former president of International Association of Statistical Information, and Shanti S. Gupta Distinguished Professor of Statistics at Purdue to name a few.
"Hes one of those people that youre proud hes one of your colleagues," said Bock.
Moore has been teaching since 1967 and has taught four statistics classes at Purdue at many different levels. He's taught the beginning class, Statistics 113, "Statistics and Society," and higher level courses like Statistics 501, "Experimental Statistics I."
"Successful teaching is an interaction," Moore said.
Statistics 501 and 502 are his favorite courses to teach because the students tend to be untraditional and interested in learning the concepts more so than other courses.
"In the context of a research university, Im probably more interested in teaching than many professors," Moore said.
