Student accused in murder
could face death penalty
From Staff Reports
The Purdue student suspected of killing two Korean
sisters in August may find out Friday if he'll be facing the death penalty.
The attorneys for Zhan Yin, 27, a graduate student
in biology and alleged murderer of Yeunkyung Woo, 31, a doctoral student
in biology, and her sister Hyo Kyung Woo, 29, of Chicago, will meet
with the Tippecanoe County prosecutor to discuss the case.
Jerry Bean, county prosecutor, said the attorneys
would probably discuss the status of discovery in the case, exchange
information and set tentative dates for trial.
Bean said Wednesday afternoon he had not yet decided
if he would pursue the death penalty. But he said earlier that it may
be discussed at the meeting.
The attorneys and Bean will meet at 9 a.m. Friday
in the county's Superior Court.
Yin has 12 counts filed against him two
counts of murder, two counts of murder while attempting to commit burglary
or robbery, two counts of robbery, two counts of confinement, two counts
of theft and single counts of both burglary and attempted arson.
The Woo sisters were murdered Aug. 2 in Yeunkyung's
Purdue Village apartment. The sisters were each beaten with a hammer
and stabbed in the throat with a kitchen knife.
