Lindberg Road to close Friday

One end of Lindberg Road will be closed for 30
to 60 days beginning Friday, making it more difficult for residents
of the road to travel to and from their homes.
The closing of the west end of Lindberg Road is
just one part of a many-month project which started last May. Alan Jones,
project supervisor, said he does not expect the road to be completely
finished until next year.
"We're talking about trying to finish it next September,"
said Jones.
An alternate route has been devised for motorists
who need to get to Willowbrook West Apartments and the West Lafayette
Christian Church of Lindberg Road, both of which are located on Lindberg
Road. Traffic should use the detour that follows McCormick Road to Blackbird
Farms' Kestrel Boulevard to avoid construction, said Jones. A speed
reduction to 20 mph will be enforced on Kestral Boulevard until the
west end of Lindberg Road is reopened.
Barbara Shaffer, area manager for Willowbrook West,
said the company is doing everything it can to make traveling easy for
its residents. A shuttle bus as well as CityBus access have been provided
for this year's residents as alternate options for getting to campus.
"We'll work with them on whatever happens to make
sure we accommodate our residents," said Shaffer.
Some residents of Willowbrook West prefer driving
to campus over riding the shuttle and the construction has created some
problems.
"You have to leave about five minutes earlier to
go to class," said Adam Gudeman, a sophomore in the School of Technology.
"It's also an inconvenience to get to 52 or over to Northwestern."
Lindberg Road has been closed at the intersection
of Northwestern Avenue for several weeks, forcing Willowbrook West and
Blackbird Farms residents to take roads other than Lindberg Road to
get to and from their homes.
Lindberg Road, which is two lanes, will be expanded
to three lanes by the time the project is finished. Enough pavement
will be laid down to create four lanes if ever all four were necessary.
Eighty percent of the funding for the project will
come from federal dollars. The Indiana Department of Transportation
oversees those federal dollars. Atlas Excavating will complete the project's
construction work and Bernardin, Lochmueller & Associates, Inc.
is handling all inspecting and engineering aspects of the project.
