Market forces cause more harm than helpAfter this month's horrible tragedy in New York City and Washington, D.C., I hope we've heard the last of those who would suggest we trust in pure market forces to cure this country's ills. After all, where were the market forces when terrorists bombed this country? Gouging prices at the gas pump, selling off stock and plunging us deeper into economic trouble, and pleading for billion-dollar bailouts. It was the government and the American people who both paid the price and came to the rescue during this time of crisis. It will be the federal government that helps rebuild NYC, Washington, D.C., and the airline industry as well as boost airport security, which the market had relegated to under-trained, minimum wage workers. It was Indiana's state government that ultimately strove to protect consumers at the pump. Where were the market forces in all of this? Doing what they do best: protecting their own interests. Given the choice, I'll take a compassionate government that lets me have a voice over cold market forces any day. Michael D. Jones Lafayette Resident |
