New generation should stray from selfishness

Every generation experiences its amount of truth and responds in a way that will determine how this country goes forward. It is also said that only during a time of crisis does a person's true character come out. Now is such a time for the current generation of Purdue students.

How will you respond? I hope and pray it will be positive. America needs for the generation now coming of age to take a new awareness of the world around and show a firm resolution to fight evil in whatever form it takes. America needs for the students of today to actually care about more than your own little circle of life.

I am afraid that my generation, the so-called "baby boomers" have failed in our test. We grew to be shallow characters too caught up in our own selfish lives, as illustrated by one Bill Clinton. We allowed ourselves and our children to become "fat, dumb and happy."

Perhaps the events of last week, and those still to happen before this is all over, will stir a new awakening for the things that are really important in life and a resolve to make the world better. The generation that fought tyranny in World War II has given us a great country, let us not let them down.
