Museum hosts rock bands for 'Not Quite Wright Night'

By Danny Conard

There's going to be a battle tonight, but odds are, no one's going to get hurt. That is, unless someone falls while stage diving.

From 6:30 to 10:30 tonight, the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette is hosting "Not Quite Wright Night" with a battle of the bands.

This event, part of the Fusion Fridays series held the last Friday of every month, takes its name from the American artist Frank Lloyd Wright. This event is a chance for college students and young professionals to mingle and enjoy entertainment, food and art.

Normally, Fusion Fridays run from 8 to 10 p.m. and involve the art exhibits showing at that time. However, this Friday is not a normal one for the museum; an exhibition will not be present on the day of the event, hence the competition.

With a cover charge of $7, those attending tonight's event will get to see four area bands.

Among these four are three rock bands with Purdue ties — Feasible, Daine and the misleadingly named Psycho Reggae.

Bryan Graves, Feasible's guitarist and Purdue graduate, said his band has rock and jazz influences, while Psycho Reggae member and computer science researcher Dave Whittinghill said his band has more of an alternative sound.

As battles go, there has to be a winner. The audience, instead of just viewing the proceedings, will serve as judges to decide who will be the victors. The band with most votes will win another paid appearance at the museum's next Friday night event, Artoberfest.

The museum's events are keeping up with a wave of other area art museums who are also putting on similar events such as the Indianapolis Museum of Art's "First Friday," and Cincinnati Museum of Art's "Thank Van Gogh it's Friday." These events focus on breaking down the normal stigmas of the art world and art museums in particular.

Kate O'Brien, coordinator of events for the museum, said, "We are trying to attract those who would otherwise never set foot in an art museum."

For more information concerning either the bands, the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette or Fusion Fridays contact Kate O'Brien at 742-1128 or on the Web at www.dcwi.com/~glma.
