Students must respect other RESNET usersThis time last year, a conspiracy unfolded here at Purdue. Using computers, agitators reeked havoc on campus through the Internet, and caused a mass disruption of systems. Once found, they were punished to the full extent of the law. Unfortunately, punishments were minimal because they had not committed illegal deeds. Those unfair and selfish students arranged for a system of computers to download movies in mass quantities. Normally, this is no cause for concern; however, they managed to occupy 80 percent of the RESNET service. This caused major problems for the other 20,990 students using RESNET. This year seems no different. RESNET is painstakingly slow and students are sick of it. I do not believe that I am the only student peeved about the comatose performance of the "almighty" RESNET. I call upon students to take action. Working together, we can improve the system's overall performance. The main action required for our goal is conservation. Purdue's RESNET is shared among all the computers on campus, leaving less speed for the individual. We need to respect each others RESNET needs. All students paid the same amount for RESNET service, so shouldn't that constitute a fair displacement of quality performance between each student? If a person can cut some Internet time out of their everyday life, the results will emerge. Everyone's computer speed will increase while RESNET works faster and more efficiently, The key is unselfishness. As long as we remain conscious of our fellow students and understand how each person fits into the equation, the problem of slow RESNET can be eradicated.
