Peaceful actions offer best answer to attacksI would like to urge everyone in the community to consider the alternatives to violent retaliation and the so-dubbed "War on Terrorism." Recent events have caused me to appreciate, more than ever, the life of freedom and privilege that I live in this country. I would hate to see my life, or anyone else's, derailed by a bloody conflict that has so much potential to escalate out of our control. Justice must be served to those who commit such heinous acts as we saw on Sept. 11, but it must be done in a way that does not perpetuate the cycle of hatred and violence. Many individuals, more informed than I about the political history and climate of the Middle East, have spoken out about the senselessness of ending terrorism by waging war and attempting to achieve peace through force. As long as we maintain the paradigm of conflict, terrorists will exist. I urge you to consider these opinions. Much has been said about improving security and U.S. intelligence. This seems to me like doubling cancer research while continuing to smoke cigarettes. We are failing to address the root of the problem. Regardless of security measures, we will be vulnerable as long as people want to commit acts of terror against us. The United States is in a position to set a new tone for this century one of collaboration and peace. Let us lead the way to peace by example, not by violent force.
