Non-residents have unfair tuition

The price increase for non-resident tuition is absolutely ridiculous! Well-credited universities like Purdue should want people from around the world to attend their university. This would increase diversity, guarantee that more top-ranked students would attend Purdue and introduce students to Indiana, where they could later take an active role. A student at Purdue will possibly live in Indiana after graduation and begin a career; consequently strengthening the community. Instead, many students are limited to where they can attend school by tuition.

Instate tuition for Fall '00-'01 for a full time student is roughly $12,334. Not only do these students have a closer commute to Purdue, visiting the school, registration and moving in is easier when you live in-state. Out-of-state tuition this year for a full-time student is roughly $22,132. This could go up more depending on your major.

In '90-'91, non-residents paid only $4,000 more than residents to attend Purdue. In '00-'01 it jumped up to $10,000 more! What is the reasoning behind such an unequal balance? Non-residents had to forego an 88% tuition increase in the last 10 years, while Indiana residents see an increase of only 72%. With changing times, prices are bound to go up, yet the rate they're increasing is what's hurting non-residents who have their hopes set on Purdue, yet have no way of financing it.

So while many students are busting their butts through high school, hoping to get accepted to their first choice school, many of those kids won't be joining us at Purdue. Out of state tuition greatly limits where many will attend college. Everyone goes to college for the same core reason — to further their education. Why should geographical location have anything to do with that? Out-of-state tuition is not only unfair, it is absolutely ridiculous.
