Men's tennis season begins
By Purdue Sports Information
The Purdue mens tennis team begins its fall
season today as it travels to South Bend, Ind., to participate in Notre
Dames Tom Fallon Invitational.
At 11 a.m. today, Purdue plays Notre Dame in singles,
followed by another singles match at 3 p.m. against Rice. The Boilers
play Wisconsin in doubles at 5 p.m.
Purdue will be playing a different format of tennis
this weekend. The "hidden team" dual format scores no team points, but
it will give Purdue the opportunity to have players compete at every
position.
"We need to be solid in all positions," said Purdue
coach Tim Madden. "My plan is to not have any individual at one spot
the entire weekend."
Madden, who is in his eighth season with the Boilermakers,
is looking forward to seeing how the Boilermakers handle their various
positions. Those positions include one through eight in singles and
one through four in doubles.
"I need to see who is creating a competitive edge,
and I need to see who is confident at what level and at what flight
number," said Madden.
Scott Mayer will start at No. 1 singles today.
Mayer, who won all four singles matches at last years Tom Fallon
Invitational, said his goals will be harder to obtain this weekend because
of the competitive level at which he will be playing.
Purdue plays William and Mary in singles at 9 a.m.
Saturday, against Indiana State at 3 p.m. and then play Notre Dame in
doubles at 5 p.m. Purdue plays a singles match against Michigan State
at 11 a.m. Sunday to complete the weekend.
