A chance encounter at a Walnut Council meeting will be paying big dividends to Purdue.

Charles Michler, an adjunct associate professor and a United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service scientist, was speaking at the council meeting in 1999 when he met Fred van Eck, a New York based financier.

"I gave a presentation that he saw where I discussed Purdue's hardwood tree improvement research, and what the potential impact of the program could be," said Michler.

Low consumer confidence may lead to economic recession

Consumers can now purchase cars, buy homes and take out student loans with the lowest interest rates America has seen in roughly four decades.

On Tuesday, the Federal Reserve Board lowered interest rates for the ninth time this year, lowering them from 2 1/2 percent to 2 percent in an effort to increase consumer confidence after the terrorist attacks on the United States.

This is the second time since the attacks that the board has decreased interest rates by 1/2 percent.

The Fed reported that terrorist attacks have significantly heightened uncertainty in an economy that was already weak.

Children need solace in attack aftermath

The recent attacks on America have left many Americans asking why, and children are no exception.

Though the initial experience is over, children need to try and register what happened, and adults need to realize every child will react differently and at different times as they learn more about the tragedies, said Judy Myers-Walls, a child development specialist at Purdue.

It is important for adults to remain open to kids, said Myers-Walls.

"Children will respond differently according to age and personality," she said.
