Airport uses new types of security
By Dave Stephens Wearing camouflage fatigues and a black beret, Tom Maguire doesn't look like typical airport security. But Maguire, a master sergeant in the Indiana National Guard, isn't a typical security guard. Maguire is one of three National Guardsmen on duty at the Purdue University Airport, as part of an executive order by President Bush and Gov. Frank O'Bannon. The guardsmen, who arrived on Sunday, will be stationed at the airport for six months, until further security measures can be taken.
Long-distance relationship
Unlike many students who went home to see their parents over October Break, Ashley Culbertson couldnt visit with her father. In fact, Culbertson, a junior in the School of Liberal Arts, hasn't seen her dad in more than two months because he's hundreds of miles away, up in the International Space Station. The last time Culbertson saw her dad was on Aug. 10 for the launch of Space Station flight Expedition 3. This is the third space expedition her dad's been on. Culbertson has watched all of her father's launches into space and each time it gets harder for her to see him go. "(The launches) are always really hard to watch, we all get really nervous," said Culbertson. "This past launch was especially hard for a couple of reasons. One is that I'm older now and I understand everything that's going on. The other reason is that this mission isn't just a normal seven- to 10-day mission," said Culbertson. |
