PSG votes to remove bill about student elections

The Student Senate voted to table indefinitely a bill that would have changed the support of candidates in student elections.

In what was its last meeting the temporary senate decided it would be pointless to vote on the bill because campaigning for Purdue's first campus-wide Student Senate election began earlier that day. Adam Thomas, PSG senator, said it would be confusing to start campaigning and then introduce new campaigning rules the next day.

If it had passed, the bill would have given student organizations outside Purdue Student Government more freedom in endorsing candidates and financially supporting campaigns. The bill will not be brought up for discussion again unless a senator re-introduces it.

Voting for the elections begins Monday and ends Wednesday. Only three academic schools have races for the two available seats. Other schools have two or less. In the next couple of weeks PSG will form a committee to look at how this election was conducted. Matt Newton, student body vice president, said the issues the committee will look at include: the lack of candidates, financing for the candidates and the way students petition to run for a seat.

He said they did not know what kind of turnout this election was going to have because of the restructured organization and the lack of student awareness about it. "We're trying to use this (election) to work out what kinks we've found along the way," he said.

The temporary senators had been in place since April when PSG restructured following a referendum passed by student vote. The term of the senators voted upon next week will run until next April when senate elections will again occur. After that, senate elections will occur annually in April.
